If you have ever sat in front of the mirror trying to decide between balayage and highlights, you are not alone. They are the two most popular color services we do at Monarch Studio, and they are also the two most often confused. Both lift the color of your hair. Both create dimension. Both look beautiful. But they are very different techniques with very different results, and choosing the right one comes down to what you actually want from your color.
Here is a clear breakdown of what each one is, who it works best for, and how to decide which is right for you.
Highlights are a foiling technique. Your stylist takes thin, woven sections of hair, paints them with lightener, and wraps each section in foil to process. The foil traps heat and contains the lightener, which means highlights can lift your hair to a much brighter, lighter shade than other techniques. Highlights start at the root and run all the way down to the ends, giving your whole head a more uniformly lightened look.
Highlights are the right call if you want:
Highlights also pair beautifully with a glaze or toner, which we always recommend at the end of a service to refine the tone and add shine.
Balayage is a freehand painting technique. The word itself is French for “to sweep,” and that is exactly what your stylist is doing — sweeping the lightener onto the surface of your hair in soft, hand-painted strokes. There are no foils. The color is applied in a way that mimics how the sun would naturally lighten your hair, with most of the lift concentrated through the mid-lengths and ends.
Balayage is the right call if you want:
Balayage gives every client a slightly different result because it is painted by hand, which is part of why it has become the signature technique for clients who want something custom.
| Balayage | Highlights | |
| Application | Hand-painted, freehand | Foiled, sectioned |
| Lightness level | Soft to medium lift | Medium to bright lift |
| Root line | Soft, blended | More defined |
| Maintenance | Every 3 to 4 months | Every 6 to 8 weeks |
| Final look | Lived-in, natural | Polished, uniform |
| Best for | Effortless, low-maintenance | Brighter, classic blonde |
Maintenance is one of the biggest practical differences between the two.
Highlights need to be touched up every six to eight weeks to keep the contrast looking fresh and the root line clean. If you let highlights grow out too long, the line between your natural color and the lightened pieces becomes obvious.
Balayage is designed to grow out gracefully. Most balayage clients come in every three to four months for a refresh, and some go even longer between appointments. That is part of the appeal — if you are someone who wants beautiful color without a strict salon schedule, balayage gives you back that flexibility.
Both techniques benefit from a glaze or toner refresh in between full appointments, which keeps the tone bright and the shine consistent.
Ask yourself three questions:
One: How often do you actually want to be in the salon?
If you love being in the chair and want to stay bright and refreshed, highlights are the answer. If you want beautiful color but a longer runway between appointments, balayage is built for that.
Two: Do you want a polished look, or a lived-in look?
Highlights give you a more defined, classic blonde with clear contrast. Balayage gives you a softer, more organic finish that looks like the sun did it.
Three: What is your hair history?
If you have been highlighting for years and want to transition to something lower maintenance, balayage is a beautiful next chapter. If you have always wanted to go brighter and have not yet, highlights will get you there faster.
There is also a third option that combines the best of both: a balayage with face-framing highlights. Your stylist hand-paints the body of your hair for that lived-in finish, then adds traditional foil highlights around your face for a brighter pop where it matters most. We do this combination often at Monarch Studio, and it is one of the most flattering options for clients who do not want to choose.
The honest answer is that the best color service is the one that fits the way you actually live. The right consultation makes that decision easy. When you come in for a color appointment at Monarch Studio in San Diego’s College Area, your stylist will look at your current color, your hair texture, your skin tone, and your day-to-day routine, and recommend the technique that gets you the result you actually want.
If you are still torn between balayage and highlights, book a complimentary color consultation. We will talk through the options, show you references, and build a plan that fits your hair and your life.
